Master’s Degree Programme in Linguistic Data Sciences ![]()
This Master’s degree programme, taught entirely in English, provides an opportunity to study language in today’s digitalized society from a variety of perspectives: sociolinguistics, language technology, and translation. The core of this programme consists of a set of courses in empirical linguistics (syntax, phonetics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, contact linguistics, translation studies, language technology) that offer various areas of specialization for the students.

Methodological issues and practices in corpus linguistics, that is, data collection, structure and form of data, automatic and manual annotation, mathematical modelling, qualitative and quantitative analysis in corpus linguistics, with a special focus on some fields of variationist research (e.g. areal linguistics, World Englishes, diachronic change, Big Data approaches).

Helsinki digital humanities hackathon (DHH) ![]()
The Helsinki Digital Humanities Hackathon is a chance to experience an interdisciplinary research project from start to finish within the span of 10 days. For researchers and students from computer science and data science, the hackathon gives the opportunity to test their abstract knowledge against complex real-life problems. For people from the humanities and social sciences, it shows what is possible to achieve with such collaboration. The Hackathon admits a limited number of applicants each Spring, 5 ECTS can be gained by students at the University of Helsinki and other universities.

The Methodological unit at the Helsinki Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (Uni Helsinki) organizes a recurrent Brown Bag Seminar to highlight novel methodological approaches in humanities and social sciences. The idea of the meetings is to introduce methodological innovations and cutting-edge research in various disciplines in an easily accessible manner and have an interdisciplinary discussion in an easy-going atmosphere over lunch.
There will be a 20-minute introduction to the methodological theme, followed by an open discussion of 40 minutes. The seminars are open to everybody and welcome a multidisciplinary and methodologically curious audience. The language of the meetings can be Finnish or English.

Digital Humanities Minor programme ![]()
Digital Humanities aim at developing a broad understanding of the cultural, historical, and social aspects of current digital humanities research. Interdisciplinary collaboration, critical thinking, innovation and practice-based digital skills will be emphasized in the studies. Statistical Methods for Text Data Analysis ![]()
This course teaches various statistical methods for modeling and analysing text data. The material consists of text, videos, and slides. At the end of each section there is a quiz where you can test your skills.

This online course consists of 10 topics focusing on using the CSC High Performance Computing environment, which has been tailored for researchers to be easy and efficient for scientific use. The CSC services (Puhti, Allas…) discussed in this course are free-of-charge for academic research, education and training purposes in Finnish higher education institutions and in state research institutes (subsidized by the Ministry of Education and Culture, Finland)..

You will learn the fundamentals of supercomputers and high performance computing, the essential vocabulary needed to understand what supercomputing really is all about, and what is needed to understand how supercomputers used. Introduction to Speech Analysis ![]()
The main goal of the course is to provide students with basic tools for studying speech samples. The course provides an overview of the processing of speech data and acoustic-phonetic analysis methods of speech. The course will introduce students to the possibilities of using the Praat speech analysis program and learn how to flexibly apply the program’s features in their own work. The course will also teach students how to use the ELAN program, which can transcribe and annotate audio as well as video. In addition, they will experiment with an automatic speech recognizer.

The Digital Humanities Course Registry is a curated platform that provides an overview of the growing range of teaching activities in the field of digital humanities worldwide. The platform is a joint effort of two European research infrastructures:
CLARIN-ERIC and DARIAH-EU.
DARIAH-Campus is a discovery framework and a hosting platform for DARIAH and DARIAH-affiliated offerings in training and education.
Programming Historian publishes novice-friendly, peer-reviewed tutorials that help humanists learn a wide range of digital tools, techniques, and workflows to facilitate research and teaching.
