SUMMARY:HSSH Brown Bag Seminar: Scaling Qualitative and Narrative Analysis of Multimodal Research Materials: The Datascene
DESCRIPTION:The session will be held on Wednesday\, September 16 from 12:00-13:00 at Fabianinkatu 24a\, 5th floor\, room 532. For remote participation\, use this link. \nDigital research materials increasingly combine multiple forms of evidence: moving and still images\, speech\, sound\, written language\, webpages\, metadata and pre-existing structured datasets. Yet computational research methods frequently analyse these materials separately or reduce them to whichever modality is easiest to process. Text may be detached from its audiovisual context\, images from their surrounding discourse\, and statistical patterns from the original materials through which their social meaning was produced.\n\nThis HSSH Brown Bag presentation introduces Datascene\, a developing research infrastructure and computational method for analysing heterogeneous and multimodal materials as structured research data. Datascene is designed to support video\, audio recordings\, textual documents\, individual photographs\, websites and pre-existing multimodal research corpora. It brings together speech and language processing\, computer vision\, temporal analysis\, semantic metadata\, machine learning\, statistical methods and computational social-science approaches.\n\nAudiovisual material provides the project’s principal methodological case because video combines temporal\, visual\, auditory\, textual and narrative evidence within the same source. The underlying method is nevertheless more general: observations from different materials and modalities are represented as mutually addressable\, inspectable and comparable analytical objects while maintaining transparent links to their original sources.\n\nThe associated method paper asks how qualitative and narrative analysis can be computationally operationalized and scaled without detaching theoretical concepts from source evidence or transferring interpretive authority entirely to automated systems. Datascene approaches actors and agencies\, events\, relations\, narrative developments and other theoretically informed concepts as source-bound analytical objects. Computational systems may detect\, organize\, compare and propose connections among evidence\, while researchers retain authority to inspect\, correct\, confirm\, reject and interpret the resulting propositions.\n\nThe presentation will discuss several dimensions of scalability: analysis across larger corpora\, movement between different analytical levels\, integration of multiple modalities and material types\, comparison across sources\, and reuse of confirmed observations across analytical procedures. It will also consider the methodological distinction:\nObservation ≠ measurement ≠ candidate interpretation ≠ confirmed interpretation ≠ research claim.\nThe broader objective is to establish scalable and reproducible workflows for research-grade multimodal analysis while preserving human interpretability\, theoretical plurality and methodological traceability. Datascene is intended to support research in the social sciences\, humanities\, communication\, media studies and related fields\, as well as the analysis of heterogeneous digital collections held by cultural and memory institutions. Future large-scale processing is planned through CSC computing infrastructure.\n\nThe session is particularly recommended for researchers interested in the use of artificial intelligence\, machine learning and statistical methods in qualitative research. No specialist technical background is required. Participants are invited to consider how computational methods might extend interpretive research without displacing its theoretical foundations or the researcher’s analytical judgment.\n\nAbout the speakers:\n\nPetteri Laine  is a PhD researcher in Computational Social Sciences with more than 20 years of experience in media\, communications\, and creative industry management. He combines extensive industry expertise with solid computational and analytical research skills. He is the research lead of Datascene and has a clear vision for its development. Laine is writing his thesis about the emergence of the self-determined data subject in the faculty of social sciences of the University of Helsinki.\n\nJukka Kortti is a social science historian at the University of Helsinki. He holds the title of docent (associate/adjunct professor) at the University of Helsinki and Aalto University. His research interests focus on media history and intellectual history. He has recently directed a research project on the history of the Finnish public broadcasting company Yle (Yle100) and has published widely on media history\, including textbooks and peer-reviewed theoretical contributions in leading journals of the field. He is currently preparing a monograph on historical documentary films for Palgrave Macmillan.\n\nReko Elovainio is a PhD researcher in Social Psychology with more than 10 years of experience in related fields. His expertise lies in Computational Social Science methodologies and the application of virtual reality technologies in social psychological research. Elovainio has strong understanding of the challenges in managing video data.\n\n\nThe seminars are open to everybody. For remote participation\, use this link. \nThe use of AI in qualitative research has become a heated debate\, with strong opinions for and against what this means for scientific research. In 2025\, for instance\, more than four hundred qualitative researchers signed an open letter in Qualitative Inquiry – “We Reject the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence for Reflexive Qualitative Research\,” arguing that statistical prediction is not understanding and that reflexive analysis is work that only humans can do. The same journal has since carried several rebuttals to this epistemic position\, beginning with Stefano De Paoli’s “Why We Should Reject to Reject…”\, which argues that the boundary between human and machine interpretation is not as clear-cut. This Brown Bag seminar will not decide the debate. What we want to do instead is bring together people from the University of Helsinki and elsewhere to discuss these issues and share experiences of doing qualitative research in a rapidly changing academic environment. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Seminar: Frictional memory - the afterlives of lynching in the digital public spheres
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we present a hybrid methodological approach for studying large-scale digital discourse by combining computational analysis with close and interpretive reading. We use our recent study of the digital afterlives of lynching on Twitter as a case study to demonstrate how computational methods can help researchers identify patterns across large collections of social media data while retaining the contextual and interpretive depth of qualitative analysis. \nWe introduce the idea of scalable reading\, which combines the breadth of computational or distant reading with the depth of close reading. Our dataset consists of 133\,370 English-language tweets referring to lynching in the United States between 2007 and 2022. We demonstrate how different computational techniques can be used at different stages of the research process\, including natural language processing\, transformer-based named entity recognition\, entity verification using Wikidata and Wikipedia\, hashtag co-occurrence analysis\, and BERT-based topic modeling. \nRather than treating computational results as the final interpretation\, we use them to identify patterns\, connections\, and points of tension that can then be examined through close reading. For example\, hashtag co-occurrence analysis allows us to trace how references to historical figures and events become connected with contemporary events and movements\, while topic modeling reveals different and sometimes competing meanings associated with the term “lynching.” \nWe will introduce three methodological concepts that emerged from this combination of computational and interpretive analysis: temporal traction\, referring to how digital references connect past and present; semantic abrasion\, referring to the collision of competing meanings and interpretations; and visibility routing\, referring to the uneven ways in which platform infrastructures shape what becomes visible\, by whom\, and where. \nThe talk will also discuss the methodological challenges of working with large-scale social media data. Computational approaches can reveal patterns that would be difficult to identify through close reading alone\, but scaling up does not eliminate the need for contextual knowledge\, interpretation\, and ethical reflection. In particular\, we discuss the risks of decontextualization and the ethical challenges involved in computationally studying histories of racialized violence. \nFinally\, we reflect on what this approach can offer researchers working with other forms of large-scale textual or digital data. The central methodological question is not whether computational or qualitative methods are preferable\, but how the two can be combined so that computational patterns become starting points for interpretation rather than substitutes for it. This approach offers a way of working across disciplinary and methodological boundaries and may be useful for researchers in the humanities and social sciences who want to incorporate computational methods into the study of digital texts\, discourse\, memory\, and cultural phenomena. \nFeeza Vasudeva is an Academy Researcher at the University of Helsinki (Research Council of Finland\, 2025–2029)\, leading the DIVINE project (Digital Interfaces and Virtual Innovations in New Expressions of Faith). Her research investigates how digital technologies reshape political belief\, religious publics\, and democratic life. Her work spans multiple interconnected areas: as part of HSSH’s ‘Datafication of Society’ initiative\, she examined how collective violence\, specifically lynching in India and America\, circulates\, persists\, and fragments across digital platforms; simultaneously\, she investigated political deification and religious populism in global contexts. Within DIVINE\, this now extends to AI-generated religious content and aesthetics\, including her work on Godbots\, a study of how conversational AI reconfigures who or what can speak for the sacred. \nNarges Azizifard is a PhD in Computer Science and a researcher with experience in machine learning\, natural language processing\, and digital humanities. She worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Digital Humanities\, University of Helsinki (2022–2025)\, where she used NLP and machine learning methods to analyze large-scale social media data\, including Reddit and Twitter. Her research interests include computational social science\, spatial analysis\, digital humanities\, NLP\, and data-driven discourse analysis. \nEetu Mäkelä is a professor of Digital Humanities (Human Sciences–Computing Interaction) at the University of Helsinki. At the Hel­sinki Centre for Di­gital Hu­man­it­ies\, he leads a research group that seeks the technological\, processual and theoretical underpinnings of successful computational research in the humanities and social sciences. Additionally\, he serves as a technological director at the DARIAH-FI infrastructure for computational humanities and is one of three research programme directors in the datafication research initiative of the Helsinki Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Seminar: Algorithm-based facial expression analysis
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we present a research method that enables the automatic analysis of facial expressions from video recordings. In 2023 HSSH organized a workshop on the method that inspired its use in the context of language education and language assessment. We give two examples on how the method has been used in the Aasis project (Research Council of Finland 2023 – 2027) developing ways to automatically measure and assess verbal and nonverbal features of spoken interaction in L2 Finnish. \nWe briefly present a manual (Juselius et al. 2026) introducing the use of algorithm-based facial expression analysis in research that was published for researchers at the University of Helsinki City Centre Campus. The development of the manual was supported by HSSH’s Catalyst Grant funding. We will also explain what we have learnt about the limitations of the method\, and what new possibilities the software released this summer\, Py-Feat Live\, offers (https://py-feat.org/pages/pyfeat_live/). Finally\, we provide guidance to researchers on how to book Interlab\, which is located at Metsätalo. \nThe method offers new opportunities for analysing interaction and interview data\, for example. It can also be used in research on online work\, such as examining users’ facial expressions\, depending on the type of video material the researcher has collected and the research questions the data are intended to address. With the help of the manual\, University of Helsinki researchers can independently use the Py-Feat software to analyse videos recorded\, for example\, in Interlab (bookings via UH’s Outlook calendar). \nPy-Feat enables algorithm-based analysis of facial expressions and can therefore complement researchers’ methodological toolkit\, especially when the research focuses on interaction\, reactions\, or nonverbal communication using video data. Please let us know if you would like to take part in the workshop we are planning for late autumn. \nAnna von Zansen\, is a University Researcher working for two Academy Projects\, Aasis (Research Council of Finland 2023 – 2027) and DigiTala in action (2025 – 2026) at the Faculty of Educational Sciences\, University of Helsinki. Her research interests include educational technology\, language assessment\, multimodality\, L2 listening and speaking\, spoken interaction. \nJoona Juselius\, is a Research Assistant at the Faculty of Educational Sciences\, University of Helsinki. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nSolving the IIIF-puzzle – Images in Dialogue Helsinki Showcase Program\nJoin us to hear about the experiences of the Finnish International Image Interoperability Frameworkin (IIIF) (opens a new tab) implementation project Images in Dialogue\, and learn how to get started with IIIF yourself. \nThe International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) enables easy sharing and versatile use of digital collections of cultural heritage organizations in\, for example\, research and teaching. The National Library of Finland has implemented IIIF APIs in the digi.kansalliskirjasto.fi (opens a new tab) service and support for finding and viewing IIIF materials in the Finna.fi (opens a new tab) search service to improve the interoperability and usability of its collections internationally for different audiences. As a national provider of digital services\, the National Library also shares lessons learned with its networks\, especially the Finnish cultural heritage community. \nIn the event you will hear how cultural heritage collections can be reused in new ways for example in research and teaching\, with the help of IIIF\, and what the National Library of Finland (NLF) has learned from the implementation of the IIIF standard and tools. You will also get to know the National Library collections that serve as pilot materials for the project: the Ptolemaic Atlases from the 15th to 18th centuries\, the banned clandestine manuscripts from the 17th to 18th centuries\, and the medieval Fragmenta Membranea manuscript fragments. \nIn addition to the presentations\, the program includes two practical workshops. DESCRIPTION:This guest lecture with Visiting Professor Elizabeth Shakman Hurd (Northwestern University) excavates and explores a cultural\, religious and political consensus that appears to unite the US and Israel as if they were one supra-national state: “AmericaIsrael”. AmericaIsrael banks on a historical\, religious\, eschatological\, topographical\, and commercial fascination with the Holy Land among many Americans which predates 1948 and encompasses and exceeds Christian and Jewish Zionisms. This suspension of the US border with Israel is also bound up with the suspension of the border between Zionism and Judaism\, such that to be or become American is to be or become a Zionist. DESCRIPTION:Ground-truth datasets are supposed to nail down facts about the “world”\, so that machine-learning models trained on them will behave reliably in that same world. Yet when annotation is outsourced to crowdworkers whom engineers do not know\, and often distrust\, how is such reliability achieved or even imagined? Based on 27 interviews with machine learning researchers\, crowdsourcing practitioners\, and industry insiders\, this research investigates how ground-truth datasets are stabilised. \nThis seminar’s speaker is Laura Savolainen\, a postdoctoral researcher working at the intersection of sociology and science and technology studies. DESCRIPTION:Mikä on FAIR Science Café? \nFAIR Science Café on rento ja vuorovaikutteinen verkkotapahtuma\, jossa tutkija saa puheenvuoron kertoakseen työstään\, tutkimuksestaan ja sen tuloksista omin sanoin. SampoSampo on kuitenkin sovitettu osaksi kansallista FIN-CLARIAH/DARIAH-FI-tutkimusinfrastruktuuria ja sisältää myös datapalvelun varaan Sampo-mallin mukaisesti kehitetyn semanttisen SampoSampo-portaalin\, jonka käyttö ei edellytä ohjelmointitaitoa. \nSampoSammon kaltaisen linkityspalvelun rajapintojen avulla voidaan rikastaa dataa uusia datapalveluita kehitettäessä. Sitä onkin jo hyödynnetty keväällä 2025 julkaistun massiivisen Kirjesammon datan rikastamisessa. SampoSammon innovaatioita ovat: \n\nMahdollisuus globaaliin\, eri sampojen yliseen hakuun\, selailuun ja data-analyysiin. Järjestelmän avulla löytyy esimerkiksi tietoa lähes 100 000 suomalaisesta historiallisesta henkilöstä.\nMahdollisuus eri tietolähteiden laadun varmistukseen vertailemalla niiden tietoja toisiinsa. Esimerkiksi Mikael Agricolasta löytyy yllättäen keskenään ristiriitaista tietoa.\nMahdollisuus hakea kokonaisuuteen kuuluvien entiteettien\, kuten henkilöiden ja paikkojen välisiä yhteyksiä\, ja niiden välisiä suomenkielisiä perusteluja. Miten esimerkiksi suomalaiset taiteilijat liittyvät Italiaan tai Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim Saksaan? Tässä hyödynnetään samanaikaisesti sekä sampojen tietämysgraafien yhteyksiä että tekoälyn laajoja kielimalleja (neuro-symbolic AI\, hybrid AI\, explainable AI).\n\nSampoSampo on taottu hyödyntäen Aalto-yliopistossa ja Helsingin yliopistossa kehitettyä Sampo-mallia ja Sampo-UI-työkalua. Palvelun taustalla olevat monimuotoiset tiedot on kerätty yhteen\, harmonisoitu ja muunnettu avoimeksi linkitetyksi dataksi ja datapalveluksi FAIR-periaatteiden mukaisesti (Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, Re-usable data). Tämä mahdollistaa aineistojen hakemisen\, selailun\, digitaalisten ihmistieteiden data-analyysit ja älykkään tietämyksen muodostamisen (knowledge discovery). Datapalvelu on julkaistu Linked Data Finland LDF.fi -alustalla\, jonka SPARQL-rajapinnan avulla on kehitetty SampoSampo-portaali. In recent years\, the Finnish Network for Data-intensive Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences (DARIAH-FI) together with The Language Bank of Finland (Kielipankki) have developed tools and methods to access\, analyze\, and enrich large-scale data from social media outlets\, gaming outlets and other web-based platforms. \nDuring the last two years the work has focused on facilitating research with new datasets and tools; this workshop showcases these infrastructures. For instance\, DARIAH-FI affiliates have developed tools to enable data scraping from online forums or to provide automatic summaries of video clips. On the other hand\, large collections of online language have been collected and enriched with metadata to allow more detailed analysis. \nIn this workshop\, the developers of the new resources will demonstrate their tools and datasets.
