SUMMARY:Brown Bag Seminar: “Untrustworthy” workers and “ground truth”
DESCRIPTION:Ground-truth datasets are supposed to nail down facts about the “world”\, so that machine-learning models trained on them will behave reliably in that same world. Yet when annotation is outsourced to crowdworkers whom engineers do not know\, and often distrust\, how is such reliability achieved or even imagined? Based on 27 interviews with machine learning researchers\, crowdsourcing practitioners\, and industry insiders\, this research investigates how ground-truth datasets are stabilised. \nThis seminar’s speaker is Laura Savolainen\, a postdoctoral researcher working at the intersection of sociology and science and technology studies. Her research examines the social and political dimensions of algorithmic systems \nThe Methodological unit at the Helsinki Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (Uni Helsinki) organizes a recurrent Brown Bag Seminar to highlight novel methodological approaches in the humanities and social sciences. The idea of the meetings is to introduce methodological innovations and cutting-edge research in various disciplines in an easily accessible manner and have an interdisciplinary discussion in an easy-going atmosphere over lunch. \nThere will be a 20-minute introduction to the methodological theme\, followed by an open discussion of 40 minutes. The seminars are open to everybody and welcome a multidisciplinary and methodologically curious audience. The language of the meetings can be Finnish or English. \nThis is a hybrid event taking place at the University of Helsinki\, Fabianinkatu 24 A\, 5th floor\, room 531. For remote participation\, use this link. \nMore information is available on the event site.

SUMMARY:Digital Humanities Early-Career Välipala. Spring 2026
DESCRIPTION:Digital Humanities Early-Career Välipala is a regular event for early career humanities and social sciences researchers. It offers a free form opportunity to discuss and share experiences of digital methods in research. The focus is on digital good practices\, stumbling blocks and tricks regarding use of data\, tools and analysis methods. \nSnacks will be provided in the form of insights on new methods\, best practice testimonials… and cake! \nWelcome from 2 – 3:30 pm at Metsätalo\, room B427. Please register here the latest one day in advance to make sure there is enough snacks for all and pre-share your experiences to prepare for discussion. \nVälipalat Spring 2026 \nTuesday\, March 24: Digital approaches to modern social and political history. Two doctoral researchers\, Tiina Poutiainen and Olli Castrén\, give short presentations about their methodological approaches to analysing societal and political phenomena in contemporary public discourse by digital methods and data. \nTuesday April 21: Processing and analysing interview data We introduce a range of infrastructures available for processing interview data safely during research\, but more importantly\, early career researchers will share experiences with environments and tools to transcribe\, annotate\, or approach multimodality in interviews. This session is organized in collaboration with researchers from digital humanities and cultural heritage studies. \nFriday\, May 29: Digital Humanities Hackathon (time/place tbc). Visit to the Digital Humanities Hackathon (DHH) and listen to final project presentations. In this session\, we brainstorm topics for future DH Välipala sessions. \nEach session starts with a brief introduction into the theme by researchers working on that topic to facilitate free-form and open conversation. We aim to build a community and space to create and find connections. The DH välipalat are organised by and for PhD and early-career researchers. We are a group of interdisciplinary folk based in Helsinki supported by DARIAH-FI\, the digital research infrastructure for the social sciences and humanities. \nInquiries can be sent to ines.matres@helsinki.fi

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Seminar: Zionism\, Judaism\, and the Politics of Religious Dissent in the Contemporary United States
DESCRIPTION:This guest lecture with Visiting Professor Elizabeth Shakman Hurd (Northwestern University) excavates and explores a cultural\, religious and political consensus that appears to unite the US and Israel as if they were one supra-national state: “AmericaIsrael”. AmericaIsrael banks on a historical\, religious\, eschatological\, topographical\, and commercial fascination with the Holy Land among many Americans which predates 1948 and encompasses and exceeds Christian and Jewish Zionisms. This suspension of the US border with Israel is also bound up with the suspension of the border between Zionism and Judaism\, such that to be or become American is to be or become a Zionist. In recent months and years\, however\, this consensus has begun to crumble. \nThe Methodological unit at the Helsinki Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (Uni Helsinki) organizes a recurrent Brown Bag Seminar to highlight novel methodological approaches in the humanities and social sciences. The idea of the meetings is to introduce methodological innovations and cutting-edge research in various disciplines in an easily accessible manner and have an interdisciplinary discussion in an easy-going atmosphere over lunch. \nThe seminars are open to everybody and welcome a multidisciplinary and methodologically curious audience. Please note that this is a 2-hour Brown Bag Seminar special. Coffee and snacks will be served – sign up here for catering by 14.4.2026! \nThis is a hybrid event taking place at the University of Helsinki\, Fabianinkatu 24 A\, 5th floor\, room 532. For remote participation\, use this link. \nMore information is available on the event site.
